Self Harm + Sabotage

self harm + sabotage

Have you ever done any of these behaviors below to yourself on purpose?

  • Banged, punched, kicked, assaulted any part of the body by your own hand or object
  • Burned, scratched, pinched the skin on any part of the body
  • Tried to/succeeded in breaking bones
  • Consumed poisons, drugs, inedible substances to cause harm
  • Caused skin to bleed with sharp objects, fingernails, teeth
  • Kept wounds from healing by picking scabs

Hurting yourself intentionally is called ‘self-harm’ or ‘self-injury.’ Stigmatized and quite misunderstood, this purposeful practice is often a coping skill for a more significant stressor in life. These acts are representations of inward pain and emotional distress. Such pain needs to be released. You are not alone in wanting to be free of pain.

What about self-sabotage? What does this mean?

Society understands self-harm to be physical, to the body. Self-sabotage refers to intentionally setting yourself up for failure, compromising your potential and opportunity for success. Some do this actively, while others are completely unaware of their influence in missing the goal.

Sabotage could be present in any area of life, like relationships, at work, or in school. It can manifest in your thoughts, feelings, and behavior:

  • Compromising boundaries set for others
  • Sacrificing/neglecting needs for others
  • Being critical instead of open to learning and change
  • Holding grudges and resentments
  • Projecting emotions onto others
  • Gaslighting, manipulation in relationships
  • Being inauthentic, hiding your true self
